Definitions

 

Here are some common terms used in the special education system.  

 

 

CSE - Committee on Special Education

 

504 Plan - Formal agreement between school and family assisting students with disabilities. Link from Understood about 504.


IEP - Individual Education Plan, a binding document with services and supports that the school must follow.

 

SEAC - Special Education Advisery Council - A mixed group of parents and educators that advise and advocate on special education issues

Advocates - People that assist parents/guardians navigate educational system

 

Lawyers - Licensed Attorneys, some of which specialize in educational laws and litigation

 

Modification - special interventions determined by meetings and documented on IEP. Link from NYC ED 

 

ADHD - a common condition that can make it hard to focus, manage emotions, and much more

 

Corporal Punishment - An illegal and outdated form of punishment, often physical in nature

 

IDEA - Individuals with Disabilities Education Act - is a law that makes available a free appropriate public education to eligible children with disabilities throughout the nation and ensures special education and related services to those children, supports early intervention services for infants and toddlers and their families, and awards competitive discretionary grants.

Raising and/or working with a special needs can be challenging. Working with schools, counselors and medical staff can be overhwhelming. Part of our mission is to provide avenues for support and guidance to assist you. 

 

Getting started can be overwhelming and difficult. 

In a perfect world, the school will reach out to you. Often parents must initiate contact with a school guidance counselor.
